No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra
Toyota Tundra 200
Nashville Superspeedway
LEBANON, Tenn., (August 1, 2009) – This weekend the No. 24 Zachry Racing Team struggled to overcome some obstacles at the Nashville Superspeedway. In practice David Starr could not get any grip in his race truck, and as it turned out the team discovered a ball joint had frozen up. So all the changes they were making would not have made a difference. The team went into the race with a blind setup from their teammate Terry Cook and Starr held his own around the top 10 despite the Toyota Tundra still being too tight to manage. The team made numerous changes, even pitting in the final five laps with their never give up attitude. Starr was able to finish the race in the 18th position.
The No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra Race Recap
- Starr qualified his Toyota Tundra in the ninth position with a lap time of 30.440 seconds at a speed of 157.648 mph.
- By the first competition caution on lap 35 Starr was telling Crew Chief Jason Miller that his truck was tight in and he was struggling on entry. The team called Starr to pit road and pulled two spring rubbers and made a track bar adjustment.
- Starr restarted on lap 40 in the 16th position. During the ensuing laps Starr said his truck had no grip and Miller reassured him when the fuel burned off it would get better. By lap 76 Starr was 11th and told the team his truck was starting to do the same thing it did in practice.
- Luckily on lap 83 a caution came out for debris. The team pitted on lap 85 and again on lap 86 for fuel and took right side tires only. While on pit road they made adjustments to the track bar trying to help the tight condition.
- Starr restarted in the ninth spot on lap 88. He told Miller shortly after that, “It’s too tight and too hard to hold on the bottom of the race track.” Starr fell back to the 20th position.
- NASCAR threw a caution on lap 100 for rain. The team took advantage of the time to pit for fresh tires trying to help their driver. The race restarted on lap 105 and Starr was 17th.
- In the ensuing laps the spotter was encouraging Starr to do the best he could out there to stay on the lead lap.
- The next caution came out on lap 148 with only two laps left in the race. The team used the time to pit for four fresh tires trying to help Starr make up any ground he could.
- In the final green-white-checkered flag restart Starr maintained his position on the race track and finished the Toyota Tundra 200 in the 18th spot.
“This run was uncharacteristic of this team,” Starr said after the race. “We really worked hard to fix this truck all weekend and just didn’t do that. It takes a force, and we will not give up. We will go back to the shop and dissect this Zachry Toyota Tundra, fix this problem and we will be back up front again. I am confident in that.”
Ron Hornaday won the Toyota Tundra 200. Brian Scott, Colin Braun, Timothy Peters and Matt Crafton followed in the top five.
