David Starr
No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra
Copart 200
Milwaukee Mile
MILWAUKEE, Wis., (June 13, 2009) – Since the summer heat swept in, David Starr and his HT Motorsports Racing Team have been turning up their own heat on the race track. And this weekend’s rain-postponed race at the Milwaukee Mile was no exception. Starr raced in the top 10 most of the Copart 200 before a scheduled green-flag pit stop cost him and numerous other competitors a lap on the track. He didn’t give up, got the lucky dog and went on to finish the event in the ninth spot all the while running some of the fastest times on the track.
The No. 24 Zachry Toyota Tundra Race Recap
- On Friday when the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series field was supposed to be practicing and qualifying, rain flooded the area postponing some of the day’s events. The teams were able to practice in between showers but qualifying was canceled and the field was set up according to owners points. Starr started in the seventh spot.
- Since the race was rescheduled for different climate conditions, set up for night and raced in the day, Starr’s No. 24 Toyota Tundra was tight, as was most of the field.
- Under the first caution on lap 37 Starr told his Crew Chief Jason Miller, “I am tight in the center.” Miller called for adjustments to the tire pressures and track bar during the pit stops for Goodyear Wranglers and Sunoco fuel.
- The race restarted on lap 43 and Starr was eighth. Only 10 laps later the second caution came out. This time Starr stayed out on the track and was running ninth for the restart on lap 58.
- He worked his way into the sixth spot by lap 88. Then the team started to have radio problems and Starr could not hear his team. Miller was calling for Starr to pit under green-flag conditions on lap 121 so he did not run out of gas. Fortunately Starr recognized enough to make out what Miller was saying.
- He entered pit road on lap 121 under green and the team filled up his gas tank. He reentered the track one lap down, as was all the others who had pitted during this time.
- Unfortunately on lap 126 a caution came out. Starr was listed in the 16th position and only nine teams were on the lead lap. The team took advantage of the time and gave Starr fresh Goodyear Wranglers and topped him off with fuel again.
- The race restarted on lap 132 with Starr 16th. In the ensuing laps Starr put himself in position to get the lucky dog lap back if another caution came out.
- Then on lap 187, just in the nick of time, the fifth and final caution came out. Starr was granted the lucky dog and had to restart with only eight laps to go in the 13th position at the tail end of the longest line.
- He managed to pick up spots, passing on the outside, inside and sometimes three wide. He raced some of the fastest laps of the race coming through the field like wild. Starr finished the event in a hard-fought ninth position.
Ron Hornaday won the Copart 200. Dennis Setzer, Brian Scott, Todd Bodine and James Buescher followed in the top five.
